As Read180 and System 44 classes have begun, we are getting to know the routine. Students are working very hard in our classroom to set goals and improve on their reading skills and their attitudes towards reading. One thing they have been learning about is having a Growth Mindset. We have learned that the brain is a muscle and that we can train the brain. As you expose the brain to more and more the neurons in the brain actually start to make more connections, increasing the brain activity. Students have learned that people aren't BORN smart... they BECOME smart; through hard work and experience. Experiencing failure and deciding to have GRIT and get back up again when life is tough, deciding to never give up, is having is having a Growth Mindset.
Students have been reading about famous people who had a growth mindset and never gave up. People like Michael Jordan and J.K. Rowling. They were turned down but chose to keep trying. In our class, we keep trying and keep working hard. The hope is that through changing our mindset, we can set goals in reading and other academic areas, and achieve those a step at a time.
Not only is it a new school year, but for me, it is a new school, new city, and new friends! My family and I have just relocated here from Louisiana, where we have been living for the past 5 years. I will miss my friends and family back there, but we are excited for our new adventures here in Northern country! It is always exciting to be in a new place. Everything is clean and fresh. You can make it your very own. Hang your pictures any where you want. Get a whole new picture if you want. Nothing has to be like it was, or you can bring in your old memories and things you brought with you to make it feel more like "home". Whatever you do, it's new and it's yours! A new school year is a lot like this. A fresh start. No matter what last year was like or what you felt like when school got out in June, today is a new day. The year is clean and fresh and place for you to design however you like. Any moment you loved from last year can be like that picture you wanna hang in your new room to bring back good memories. But moments that weren't that great can be discarded and left behind. It's a brand new year and a brand new set of teachers. Even if they knew you last year, there has been a whole summer since they saw you last. There has been a lot of growing that has happened this summer. They are excited to see you back at their school. They are looking at you with fresh eyes and looking at you with exciting potential. Whatever you want to make of this new school year you can! And if you have a bad day this year, just remember, MOMENTS PASS, and tomorrow is a new day.
I am super excited to help my students feel success and worth. I want them to walk out of the classroom and know that, to me, THEY MATTER, and they are important! It's going to be a great school year and awesome here at Newman School!!
